Mammary gland tumours are the most common neoplasms in intact bitches. Over the last decades, veterinary oncology has evolved in detecting and determining the lymph nodes to be removed in these patients for an accurate staging and prognosis, as well as to achieve better disease control and higher overall survival time. Our objective was to describe recent advances related to lymphatic drainage in bitches with mammary gland tumours, focusing on surgery, diagnosis, and prognosis. Through a systematic review using PubMed as the database, a thorough multi-step search reduced 316 studies to 30 for analysis. Vital dyes appear to be crucial in reducing the overall surgery time through transoperative staining of the lymph nodes. Imaging contrasts provide information regarding specific tumour drainage; however, there is still little evidence for their use. The axillary and superficial inguinal lymph nodes are well-established as regional lymph nodes of the cranial and caudal mammary glands. In sequence, accessory axillary, medial iliac, popliteal, and sternal lymph nodes should receive attention if they demonstrate contrast drainage, even considering that the literature has not shown a relationship between drainage and metastasis in these cases. In conclusion, recent studies have provided us with more support in regional lymph node excision regarding the TNM staging system. Studies are highly heterogeneous and method comparisons do not fit due to the non-uniformity of samples, materials, and procedures. We suggest further studies with a larger sample size, complete follow-up of patients, contrast use, and lymph node morphological and immunohistochemical analysis.

Introduction: Dogs' axillary lymph node (ALN) is often difficult to locate before surgical resection. The anatomical location of ALN often discourages Veterinarians from surgical lymphadenectomy. Considering the limited literature available, the actual incidence of metastases and the prognostic relevance are poorly understood. Methods: A non-randomized, prospective clinical study was conducted with female dogs (n = 41) with mammary gland tumor (MGT) in the thoracic or cranial abdominal mammary glands. The study investigated the risks of ALN metastasis based on tumors clinical findings, tumor size, histopathological diagnosis and grade. The main aim of this study was to compare ALN resection with or without patent blue 2.5% (PB) dye injection for sentinel lymph node visualization. A total of 46 mastectomies were performed and five animals underwent two mastectomies. In the first group, 17 patients underwent a mastectomy and lymphadenectomy without PB injection (G1). In contrast, in the second group, 24 patients also received PB injections for sentinel lymph node mapping (G2). The ALN was identified in 38/46 cases (82%). The ALN was identified and excised in only 58% of surgeries in G1(19/46), while in group 2, the lymph node was identified in 92% of the cases and resected in 100% of the cases. The use of PB improves ALN's identification and reduces the surgical resection time in dogs with MGT. Results and discussion: Surgical time differed between the two groups, as it was significantly shorter in the PB injection group compared to group 1 (80 vs. 45 min) (p < 0.0001). The overall frequency of ALN metastasis was 32%. Macroscopic abnormalities in the lymph nodes, tumor size (>3 cm), and diagnosis of anaplastic carcinoma or grade II/III mammary gland tumors were associated with a higher probability of ALN metastasis. Metastases in the ALNs are more common, in dogs presenting with tumors larger than 3 cm and diagnosed with aggressive histological subtypes. The ALNs should be removed for correct staging, prognostic evaluation, and decision for adjuvant therapy.

Background: Secretory carcinoma is a rare histological type of breast neoplasm in humans and dogs that is characterized by the presence of intracellular and extracellular eosinophilic secretions. Case Description: In this case report, we describe the cytological, histological, and immunohistochemical characteristics of secretory mammary carcinoma in a 10-year-old mixed-breed female dog with nodal and bone metastases. The bitch had a history of claudication and a mass in the left humeral scapular region, which revealed osteolysis of the proximal humerus on radiography. Fine-needle aspiration cytology revealed numerous neoplastic cells arranged mostly in cohesive groups but sometimes isolated, that contained cytoplasmic vacuoles and had a moderate-to-high nucleus: cytoplasm ratio with frequent karyomegaly and evident nucleoli. Histologically, the neoplasm was organized in solid, tubular structures with luminal spaces filled with eosinophilic secretions and was composed of cells with clear cytoplasm and prominent vacuoles that pushed the nuclei to the periphery, resembling signet ring cells. The extracellular and intracytoplasmic material of the epithelial cells was positive for periodic acid-Schiff staining and immunoreactive for alpha-lactalbumin. Two chemotherapy sessions were performed, but 1 month after surgery, the clinical condition worsened, and euthanasia was elected, accounting for 133 days of survival after surgical removal of the tumor. Conclusion: The bitch presented with secretory mammary carcinoma with nodal and bone metastases, and histological and immunohistochemical characteristics were important for diagnosis. The morphological and immunohistochemical characteristics of this carcinoma were similar to those observed in humans. Mammary gland secretory carcinoma with bone metastasis must be included as a differential diagnosis among canine mammary gland carcinomas showing cellular morphological characteristics of intracytoplasmic vacuolization and eosinophilic secretion.

Heterotopic polyodontia have been described in most domestic species. Known as a dentigerous cyst but appropriately called heterotopic polyiodontics, it rarely occurs in horses, however it is easily recognized as a congenital defect. The cysts usually associated with this condition contain part or all of dental structures. The heterotopic tooth or dental structure is usually adhered to the temporal bone and surrounded by a secretory membrane, with a accumulation of exudate and draining tract along the proximal pinna or directly over the cyst. This case report describes in a 2.5-year-old female quarter horse, weighing 430 kg, with a heterotopic polyodontia that contained two easily small's identifiable dental structures, presented for evaluation of a chronic intermittent mucopurulent exudate discharge from the right sub-auricular region in the mastoid process of the temporal bone and a drainage tract near the right pinna. The diagnosis is established with clinical, radiographic, ultrasound and confirmed by histopathological examination of the structures removed. The cystic capsule was surgically removed, measuring approximately 3.0 x 2.3 cm in diameter, filled with mucopurulent exudate and containing two dental structures within 0.5 cm in diameter and 0.2 cm in diameter. Microscopic examination revealed a cystic area covered by stratified squamous epithelium with a lympho-histio-plasmatic cell infiltrate in the dermis, which was compatible with heterotopic polyodontia. Postoperatively, there were no neuromotor sequelae and wound healing evolved positively.(AU)


A poliodontia heterotópica tem sido descrita na maioria das espécies domésticas. Conhecido como cisto dentígero, mas apropriadamente denominado poliodontia heterotópica, raramente ocorre em equinos, porém é facilmente reconhecido como defeito congênito. Os cistos geralmente associados a essa condição contêm parte ou toda as estruturas dentarias. O dente heterotópico ou estrutura dentaria é comumente encontrado aderido ao osso temporal e envolvido por uma membrana secretora, com acúmulo de exsudato e trajeto de drenagem ao longo do pavilhão auricular proximal ou diretamente sobre o cisto. Este relato descreve um caso de em um equino,fêmea, quarto de milha, com 2,5 anos de idade, pesando 430 kg, com poliodontia heterotópica que continha duas estruturas dentarias facilmente indentificadas, apresentando um orifício na região sub-auricular direita no processo mastóideo do osso temporal, com secreção mucopurulenta intermitente e crônica, próximo ao pavilhão auricular direito. O diagnóstico foi estabelecido com exame clínico, radiográfico, ultrassonográfico e confirmado pelo exame histopatológico das estruturas retiradas. A cápsula cística foi removida cirurgicamente medindo aproximadamente 3,0 x 2,3 cm de diâmetro, preenchida com exsudato mucopurulento e contendo em seu interior duas estruturas dentárias medindo cerca de 0,5 cm de diâmetro e 0,2 cm de diâmetro. O exame microscópico revelou área cística revestida por epitélio escamoso estratificado com infiltrado linfo-histo-plasmocitário na derme, compatível com poliodontia heterotópica. No pós-operatório não houve sequelas neuromotoras e a cicatrização da ferida evoluiu positivamente.(AU)


La poliodontia heterotópica ha sido descrita en la mayoría de las especies domésticas. Conocido como quiste dentígero, pero apropiadamente llamado poliodontia heterotópica, raramente ocurre en equinos, sin embargo se reconoce fácilmente como un defecto congénito. Los quistes generalmente asociados a esa condición contienen parte o la totalidad de las estructuras dentales. El diente heterotópico o estructura dental se encuentra comúnmente adherido al hueso temporal y rodeado por una membrana secretora, con acumulación de exudado y vía de drenaje a lo largo del pabellón auricular proximal o directamente sobre el quiste. En este informe se describe el caso de una hembra, cuarto de milla, de 2,5 años de edad, con 430 kg de peso, presentando poliodontia heterotópica que contenía dos estructuras dentales fácilmente identificables, con un orificio en la región subauricular derecha en el proceso mastoides del hueso temporal, secreción mucopurulenta intermitente y crónica próximo al oído derecho. El diagnóstico se estableció con examen clínico, radiográfico, ecográfico y se confirmó con el examen histopatológico de las estructuras extirpadas. La cápsula quística se extrajo quirúrgicamente midiendo aproximadamente 3,0 x 2,3 cm de diámetro, rellena con exudado mucopurulento y conteniendo en su interior dos estructuras dentales que medían aproximadamente 0,5 cm de diámetro y 0,2 cm de diámetro. El examen microscópico reveló una zona quística cubierta por un epitelio escamoso estratificado con infiltrado linfo-histo-plasmocítico en la dermis, compatible con poliodontia heterotópica. En el postoperatorio no se produjeron secuelas neuromotoras y la cicatrización de la herida evolucionó positivamente.(AU)

Systemic isosporosis, also called atoxoplasmosis or visceral coccidiosis, is a disease that affects birds in general. Pathogenesis of systemic isosporosis and its etiologic agent have not been well characterized, but taxonomically Atoxoplasma is currently considered a junior objective synonym of Isospora. The present report aimed to describe pathological and molecular findings of systemic isosporosis in captive green-winged saltators (Saltator similis) from the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil. In a commercial breeding facility eleven birds with two to nine months of age died from 2015 to 2016. These birds developed nonspecific clinical signs, including bristly feathers, hyporexia, loss of weight, and apathy. Two birds were necropsied, and grossly there were hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, necrosis of lymphoid follicles, hepatic necrosis, and severe enteritis. Merozoites were observed in the heart, small intestine, proventriculus, brain, liver, spleen, and kidneys. 23 S RNA PCR amplicons from DNA extracted from the liver and the intestinal contents had 99% identity with Atoxoplasma sp., whereas amplicons of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 ha d 97% identity with Isospora greineri. In conclusion, this report indicates that systemic isosporosis in green-winged saltator is a disease that affects the spleen, liver, and small intestine, with high mortality for young birds, resulting in significant loses to commercial breeding facilities.

The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical and histopathological aspects of topical application of pure and ozonized andiroba oil (Carapa guianensis Aublet.) on the healing process of wounds in healthy horses. Eight 6.25 cm2 wounds were surgically produced on each horse, from the cranial region to the sacrum, being four wounds on each side of the lumbar region. In three animals, left side was used for macroscopic observations and area measurement and right side was used for histopathological analysis. For the other two animals, evaluations were inverted. The beginning of the topical treatment occurred 12 hours after surgical induction of the injuries and was maintained daily until complete healing of the wounds, using saline solution (GC), ozonized saline solution (GO) sequentially and bilaterally in the craniocaudal direction, pure andiroba oil (GAP) and ozonized andiroba oil (GAO). Randomly, the sequence of the treatments was modified. Macroscopic and histopathological analyses were performed at 3, 7, 14, and 21 days after surgery. The time for complete healing of all wounds was recorded. A wound contraction of 67.75% for GC, 65.26% for GO, 67.91% for GAP, and 69.84% for GAO were recorded. Histopathologic evaluation revealed that wounds from the GAO and GAP had an advanced epithelialization, fibroblast proliferation and collagen deposition, moderate vascular proliferation, and presence of PMN infiltrate and discrete viewing of MN. It was possible to conclude that all treatments had benefits when comparing to control group, concluding that both pure and ozonized andiroba oil may be good options for treating wounds in horses.(AU)


Este trabalho realizou uma avaliação clínica e histopatológica da aplicação tópica do óleo de andiroba (Carapa guianensis Aublet), puro e ozonizado, no processo de cicatrização de feridas em cinco equinos saudáveis. Oito feridas de 6,25 cm2 foram induzidas cirurgicamente, quatro de cada lado da região lombar, craniais em relação à região sacral. Em três animais, o lado esquerdo foi destinado à avaliação macroscópica e mensuração de área, enquanto o lado direito foi destinado à análise histopatológica. Nos outros dois animais, as avaliações foram invertidas. O tratamento tópico foi iniciado 12 horas após a indução cirúrgica e foi mantido diariamente até a completa cicatrização das feridas. Foram usados, sequencialmente e bilateralmente, no sentido craniocaudal: solução salina (GC), solução salina ozonizada (GO), óleo de andiroba puro (GAP) e óleo de andiroba ozonizado (GAO). Aleatoriamente, a sequência de tratamentos foi modificada. As análises macroscópicas e microscópicas foram realizadas 3, 7, 14 e 21 dias após a cirurgia, e o tempo total para cicatrização registrado. A contração da ferida foi de 67,75% para GC, 65,26% para GO, 67,91% para GAP, e 69,84% para GAO. A avaliação histopatológica demonstrou que as feridas tratadas com GAO e GAP apresentaram uma avançada epitelização, proliferação fibroblástica e deposição de colágeno, moderada proliferação vascular e presença de infiltrados de células polimorfonucleares (PMN) e discreta proliferação de células mononucleares (MN). Foi possível concluir que todos os tratamentos usados foram benéficos perante o grupo de controle, mostrando que as versões pura e ozonizada do óleo de andiroba representam alternativas terapêuticas ao tratamento de feridas em equinos.(AU)

ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to evaluate the clinical and microscopic effects in rabbits of lamellar keratoplasty using allogeneic omentum associated with canine amniotic membrane (AM). Rabbits were divided into two groups: one received the allogeneic free omental graft covered with the AM (OM-graft group), while the other received the AM graft containing omental mesenchymal cells (OM-cell group). Clinical signs were evaluated on different postoperative days. After the clinical assessments, the rabbits were euthanized and their corneas were obtained for histopathology and immunohistochemistry (Ki-67, marker for proliferation). Both groups showed chemosis, blepharospasm, eye discharge, hyperemia, and corneal opacity/edema. Neovascularization was observed in the OM-cell group. Histopathological evaluation revealed epithelial islands within the stroma of OM-cell samples. Thirty days after surgery, complete corneal re-epithelialization had occurred in both groups. The OM-cell group showed more Ki-67 positive cells. The free omentum and its cells, combined with the AM, contributed to corneal repair, a process that was completed 30 days after lamellar keratoplasty.


RESUMO: Objetivou-se, com a pesquisa, avaliar os efeitos clínicos e microscópicos da associação do omento de coelho com a membrana amniótica (AM) canina, na ceratoplastia lamelar em coelhos. Dois grupos foram constituídos: um recebeu enxerto de omento alógeno livre, recoberto por AM (grupo OM- graft); o outro recebeu enxerto de AM contendo células mesenquimais derivadas do omento (grupo OM-cell). Manifestações clínicas foram avaliadas em diferentes tempos de pós-operatórios. Após as avaliações clínicas, coelhos foram submetidos à eutanásia e córneas foram colhidas para histopatologia e imunohistoquímica (Ki-67, marcador de proliferação). Relativamente às manifestações clínicas, ambos os grupos apresentaram sinais de quemose, blefarospasmo, secreção ocular, hiperemia e opacidade/edema. Neovascularização foi observada no grupo OM-cell. Avaliações à histopatologia mostraram que uma amostra de OM-cell apresentou ilhas de epitélio dentro do estroma. Aos 30 dias de pós-operatório, observou-se reepitelização corneal completa, em OM-graft e OM-cell. O grupo OM-cell apresentou mais células positivas para Ki-67. O omento livre e suas células, associados à AM, contribuíram para a reparação corneal, que se completou após 30 dias de ceratoplastia lamelar.

Platynosomum fastosum is a parasite that affects cats, and among these, domestic cats, especially those originating from areas with tropical and subtropical climates. It is the most common liver parasite of domestic cats and is usually located in the bile ducts and gall bladder, but may also be found in the small intestine and pancreas. Infection occurs through ingestion of geckos containing metacercariae, causing cholangitis in the bile ducts of domestic cats. The aim of this study was to report the occurrence of P. fastosum after necropsy of an asymptomatic domestic cat, with a history of sudden death, received at the Animal Pathology sector of the Ricardo Alexandre Hippler Veterinary Hospital, Espírito Santo, Brazil. In macroscopic examination adult specimens of P. fastosum were observed inside the visibly dilated bile ducts. The dilatation, the presence of parasites and papillary proliferations into the lumen of the ducts were confirmed by histopathological examination. Then, a cholangiohepatitis associated to P. fastosum infection was classified. This is the first report of the occurrence of P. fastosum in a domestic cat in the state of Espírito Santo

The objective of this study was to evaluate the infectivity of Toxocara canis eggs after interacting with isolated nematophagous fungi of the species Duddingtonia flagrans (AC001) and Pochonia chlamydosporia (VC4), and test the predatory activity of the isolated AC001 on T. canis second stage larvae after 7 days of interaction. In assay A, 5000 embryonated T. canis eggs previously in contact with the AC001 and VC4 isolated for 10 days were inoculated into domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus), and then these animals were necropsied to collect material (digested liver, intestine, muscles and lungs) at 3-, 7-, 14-, and 21-day intervals after inoculation. In assay A, the results demonstrated that the prior interaction of the eggs with isolated AC001 and VC4 decreases the amount of larvae found in the collected organs. Difference (p < 0.01) was observed in the medium larvae counts recovered from liver, lung, intestine, and muscle of animals in the treated groups when compared to the animals in the control group. At the end of assay A, a percentage reduction of 87.1 % (AC001) and 84.5 % (VC4) respectively was recorded. In the result of assay B, the isolated AC001 showed differences (p < 0.01) compared to the control group, with a reduction of 53.4 % in the recovery of L2. Through these results, it is justified to mention that prior interaction of embryonated T. canis eggs with the tested fungal isolates were efficient in reducing the development and migration of this parasite, in addition to the first report of proven predatory activity on L2.
